Local tips
Insider tips
Do Perge and Aspendos in one day: they are close together and neither takes a full morning.
Walk Kaleiçi early or late. In the middle of the day it is the busiest few streets on the coast.
Come in May, June, September or October. July and August are hot and the coast is at its fullest.
Customs and safety
Rain falls on about a third of winter days, so the season is late spring and autumn, not all year.
Beaches are relaxed and the old town is a working neighbourhood; mosques ask for covered shoulders, knees and women's hair.
Food and prayer
Turkey has an official halal accreditation body. Hotels here serve a wide mix, so ask rather than assume.
Mosques are throughout the city and old town, and in every village on the coast and into the mountains.

About Antalya
Antalya is built on a cliff above the Mediterranean with the Taurus mountains immediately behind it, and that arrangement is the whole city. The old town is on the headland above the harbour, the resort coast runs away from it in both directions, and the mountains keep the rivers running through the summer.
This stretch of coast was ancient Pamphylia, and its cities are still standing in the fields behind the beaches. Two of them, Perge and Aspendos, are within an hour, and Aspendos's theatre is close to complete.
