Local tips

  • Insider tips

    1. Go up to the Citadel late in the afternoon: better light, and the whole city laid out below.

    2. Walk downtown in the morning while the market is working. By evening it is a different, quieter place.

  • Customs and safety

    1. Amman is at 776 metres: cool January days, common rain, snow that closes the city some years. Pack for it.

    2. Downtown to the Citadel is a short distance and a long climb, and many streets are stepped.

  • Food and prayer

    1. Islam is the state religion and halal is the norm; some restaurants and hotels serve alcohol, never as the default.

    2. Mosques in every district, the call to prayer carrying across the valleys; prayer rooms at the airport and malls.

Getting around ⁨Amman⁩

  • Taxi

How the city is actually covered. The hills make walking between districts impractical and the taxis are everywhere.

    Recommended

  • Ride-hailing

Ride-hailing works across the city and settles the fare in advance.

  • Walking

Downtown is walkable end to end. Getting out of it is a climb, and between the hills it is not a walk at all.

  • Bus

Coaches leave Amman for Petra, Aqaba and the main towns; within the city the buses are not aimed at visitors.

About ⁨Amman⁩

Amman is built over hills and the geography decides everything about moving around it. The old downtown is at the bottom of a valley; the districts are on the ridges above, and getting from one to another means going down and up rather than across.

Amman works as much as a base as a destination. Jerash is an hour north, the Dead Sea an hour west, and Petra three hours south, so two nights here can cover far more than the city itself.
