Local tips
Insider tips
Take the first boat out: the sea is flattest in the morning, the sites emptiest before day trips.
Give one day to the desert. The mountains behind the coast are a different country, and most people never look.
Customs and safety
Coral is alive and breaks under a hand or a fin. Nothing is stood on, touched or taken.
The sea reflects the sun, so a boat day burns more than a beach day: cover up rather than reapply.
Food and prayer
Halal is the ordinary case in hotels and town alike; a few hotel restaurants serve pork for European visitors, labelled.
Mosques stand through the town and along the coast road; the larger hotels and the airport keep prayer rooms.
Getting around Hurghada
Taxi
How the coast road is covered between the hotels, the marina and the town. Agree the fare before setting off.

Ferry
Boats from the marina are the point of being here: the islands and the dive sites are only reachable that way.
Bus
Intercity coaches connect the Red Sea towns and run inland to the Nile Valley.

About Hurghada
Hurghada is a line rather than a centre: hotels along a coast road with the desert immediately behind them and the water immediately in front. Choosing where to stay here is really choosing which stretch of that line, and how far it is from the marina.
Almost everything worth doing is offshore or inland, not on the strip itself. A day here is a boat out to the reefs or the islands, or a drive into the Eastern Desert behind the coast.
