Local tips
Insider tips
You do not need a boat: several house reefs drop straight off the beach, which is rare worldwide.
Give one day to the inland mountains. Sinai is not only its coast, and the drive changes the picture.
Customs and safety
Ras Muhammad is a national park and all the reef is alive: nothing stood on, touched or taken out.
Beachwear belongs to the resort and its beach; the old market and residential streets are ordinary Egyptian, dress accordingly.
Food and prayer
Halal is the ordinary case across town; some hotel restaurants serve pork and alcohol for European visitors, labelled.
Mosques stand in the old market and residential districts; the larger hotels and the airport keep prayer rooms.
Getting around Sharm El Sheikh
Taxi
The coast road is covered by taxi or hotel shuttle; the bays are further apart than they look.
Recommended
Ferry
Dive and snorkel boats leave from the marina and the bays, which is how the offshore reefs are reached.
Walking
Within a bay everything is walkable: the promenade, the dive centres and the restaurants are one strip.

About Sharm El Sheikh
The Gulf of Aqaba is deep and the coral grows right up to the shoreline, so the reef wall begins where the beach ends. That single fact is why there is a town here at all, and it is what separates Sharm from a beach resort anywhere else.
The town is a series of bays along one road rather than a centre with suburbs. Na'ama Bay is the busiest, the others are quieter, and the choice between them is the main decision to make before arriving.
