Local tips

  • Insider tips

    1. Give Petra two days if you can: one is enough to see it, not to get past its first hour.

    2. Do the south in spring or autumn. Wadi Rum and Petra in July are a morning's work at most.

    3. Pack for a highland winter from December to February: Amman is 776 metres up, cold and wet.

  • Money

    1. The Jordanian dinar. Cards work in Amman, hotels and main sites; cash is useful in small towns and Wadi Rum.

  • Customs and safety

    1. Modest dress in public, more so outside Amman and at the sites, except at Dead Sea resorts and hotel pools.

    2. Petra spans several kilometres, entered by a gorge and climbed at the far end: shoes, water, a whole day.

  • Food and prayer

    1. Islam is the state religion and halal is the norm; some hotels and restaurants sell alcohol, never as the default.

    2. Mosques in every town and neighbourhood; prayer rooms at the airport, main sites and desert highway service stops.

Getting around ⁨Jordan⁩

  • Car

One road runs the length of the country and everything is on or near it. Driving is how most visitors see Jordan, and the distances are short.

    Recommended

  • Bus

Coaches connect Amman with Petra, Aqaba and the main towns, and are the usual alternative to driving.

  • Taxi

About ⁨Jordan⁩

Jordan is small and everything worth seeing is strung along one line. Amman is in the hills in the north; the Dead Sea is an hour west of it; Petra is three hours south; and Wadi Rum is an hour beyond Petra. A week does all of it without hurrying.

Three landscapes in a short drive: hills and olive country in the north, the rift valley and the Dead Sea below sea level in the middle, and sandstone desert in the south. The temperature changes with each of them.
