Riyadh to Amman: Flight Time, Airlines and Entry Rules
Riyadh to Amman is one of the shortest international routes out of Saudi Arabia, 2 hours 35 minutes in the air. The flight is the easy part. What catches most travellers out is the entry requirement, because it is completely different for Saudi citizens and for residents.
Flight time and distance
King Khalid International in Riyadh to Queen Alia International in Amman is roughly 1,295 km, and the direct flight takes 2 hours 35 minutes.
Queen Alia sits about 30 km south of central Amman. Allow 30 to 45 minutes by road depending on traffic.
Who flies the route
Three airlines operate direct, around 58 flights a week between them, so close to seven departures a day. Approximate frequencies:
- Royal Jordanian: 3 to 4 daily, business class available
- Saudia: 2 to 3 daily, business class available
- flynas: 2 daily, economy only
That frequency gives you real flexibility on timing. It also means the price gap between one day and the next can be wide.
Entry requirements, and this is the part that matters
Saudi citizens
No visa required. Visa-free entry for short stays, up to 90 days for tourism.
Residents of Saudi Arabia on other passports
You need a visa. Holding a Saudi iqama does not exempt you. Three routes:
- Visa on arrival: single entry, valid 30 days, issued at most ports
- Double-entry visa: must be applied for in advance, valid three months
- Jordan Pass: bought online before you travel
Note: some nationalities cannot get a visa on arrival and must apply in advance at the Jordanian Embassy in Riyadh. Check your passport's status before booking.
Entry rules change. Check the official source before you book.
The Jordan Pass, and when it actually saves money
The Jordan Pass is a digital document bought online before travel. It does two things:
- Waives the single-entry visa fee, provided you stay three nights or more in Jordan
- Covers entry to more than 40 tourist sites, including Petra, Wadi Rum and Jerash
If your trip is three nights or longer and includes Petra, the maths is clearly in its favour. If you are doing two nights in Amman for work or family, it probably saves you nothing.
When to book
Around seven daily departures works in your favour. On this route, price differences come more from the day you fly and how close to departure you book than from seats running out.
Three practical rules:
- Midweek is usually cheaper than Thursday or Friday
- School holidays and Eid are the busy periods on this route and prices rise noticeably
- Booking at least two weeks out gives you a real choice of times. Booking in the last 48 hours costs more, even on a short route
Getting around Amman
From the airport you have three options: taxi, ride-hailing, or the airport bus to the Medina Street area. Taxi is fastest, the bus is far cheaper.
Amman is built on hills. Distances that look short on a map can be long climbs on foot, which is worth factoring into where you stay.
